Review: Enchanted

#68 - Enchanted

Enchanted is one of the best Disney movies ever made. It's fabulous. It is the story of Giselle, a woman looking for true love. She finds her prince, but is then sent to the horrible world of modern day New York when the wicked queen, Narissa, feels threatened. Giselle meets Robert, and without meaning to, Robert and Giselle fall in love. To complicate things, Giselle's Prince Edward comes to rescue her...and Robert is already in a relationship. Narissa's partner in crime, Nathaniel, fails at his attempts to kill Giselle, so Narissa arrives in New York to do it herself. Giselle saves the day and kills Narissa. Edward marries Robert's girlfriend, Nancy, after returning to Andalasia, and Giselle and Robert live happily ever after.

This film is genius. It includes elements from almost every Disney princess film ever created, whether it be an obvious reference or a hidden one. Example of an obvious reference: Giselle mentions the seven dwarves OR "Part of Your World" is playing in the background when Giselle is looking into the fish tank. Example of a hidden reference: Giselle and Robert eating at an Italian reference and "That's Amore" is playing...a Lady and the Tramp reference...OR Giselle and Robert in a boat on a lake...a Little Mermaid reference. The plot also blends Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, and Snow White all into one princess. For any Disney fan, this movie is perfect. It's fun to search for the Disney references.

In the end of the film, Nancy says, "Wow, really great reception here!" She's talking about cell phone reception in Andalasia, but to me, it sums up my response to the entire film. The film has received great reception from its critics. I could seriously watch this movie over and over and over again. I'm pretty sure I watched it 7-8 times in the theater...and I wouldn't doubt I've watched it over 20 times on DVD.

The casting is spot on. James Marsden is a dream as Prince Edward - THAT VOICE! God, and his face. It's like he was created for the sole purpose of one day becoming a Disney prince.

Amy Adams fits the role of Giselle like a glove. She's so happy and quirky. Patrick Dempsey...swoon. He really should do more comedic movies. He's such a good fit for a film like this. Timothy Spall and Susan Sarandon were wonderful casting choices as well. Surprisingly, Susan Sarandon was phenomenal as the villain. She's never played a role quite like that, so it was a welcome change to see it.

There is absolutely NOTHING that I do not like about this film. I'm excited that it has been confirmed that there will be a sequel. The sequel will never be able to top the original, but being such a big fan of Enchanted, I am psyched for a sequel. Just another excuse to see James Marsden on screen =)

And I shall leave you with my favorite scene:

Overall, I give Enchanted 5 out of 5 stars.
