Review: Fanboys

#72 - Fanboys

Fanboys is a movie that all Star Wars fans must see. It focuses on a group of estranged friends that are brought back together because one of them is dying of cancer. His one wish is to break into the Skywalker Ranch and steal Star Wars: Episode I before it is released to the public. The group of Fanboys travel across the country to achieve this goal. After breaking into the Skywalker Ranch, they're caught...but Linus, who is the friend dying of cancer, is allowed to screen the film...per George Lucas himself. The film then cuts to the opening night of Episode I, and Linus has passed away. All of his friends are there to view the film, and they each raise a beer in his honor.

This movie is such a fun movie to watch if you're a Star Wars fan. It has tons of references, battles with Trekkies, and even cameos from stars like Carrie Fisher, Billy Dee Williams, Kevin Smith, Jason Mewes, and William Shatner. Aside from it being amusing, it has a really strong plot. I love that Star Wars brings this group of friends back together. For anyone who has been part of a fandom before, that's what these films and books do to their fans. Linus gets his wish of seeing the film and breaking into Skywalker Ranch, but he gets something even better than that - he gets his best friend back. The moral of the story is truly touching, even though the film as a whole is goofy.

One thing I will say is that Hutch's van is the most badass van ever, and I would totally drive that. It has an R2-D2 on the back, the horn is Chewbacca's voice, and the cover of the original Star Wars film is airbrushed on the side. It's any Star Wars fan's dream.

Overall, I give Fanboys 3.5 out of 5 stars.
