Review: Final Destination

#79 - Final Destination

Final Destination is a film about six passengers on a plane to Paris that cheat death, all thanks to one of the passengers, Alex Browning. He sees a vision of the plane exploding and goes into a frenzy. This leads to Alex, his teacher, and four other students being kicked off the plane. They watch the plane take off and explode right before their eyes. All suspicions turn to Alex, and the FBI is right on his back. What the FBI can't explain though is why the six surviving passengers start to get killed off one by one, in what seems to be a pattern of some sort. Alex thinks he has found a way to cheat the pattern, and so he sets off to save as many of his friends as he can. Alex, Clear, and Carter are the three remaining by the end of the film. Alex sacrifices himself for Clear, and the pattern ends. Six months later, the trio decides to finally take their trip to Paris. Alex, being the paranoid guy that he is, can't shake the feeling that death is not done with them. He pulls out his map of the seating arrangements from the plane and begins to discuss his theory with Clear and Carter. Just when things seem to be calming down, the chaos begins again. Clear saves Alex from getting hit by a bus, and Carter saves Alex from getting hit with a giant lighted marquee. Death is back, and it has skipped Alex...Carter's next. The film ends.

This film is SO late 90s, early 00s. It has an all-star cast, but the writing is terrible. I absolutely love the corny movies that were pushed out in that time frame, but do I think they're good quality films? No. I remember being terrified of this movie when I was 16 years old. I couldn't pack my suitcase without hesitating before ripping off the luggage tag. Now that I'm older, this movie is dumb and the deaths are cheesy.

Death #1 - The Airplane Explosion
Okay, so this one was pretty decent. And Devon Sawa's reaction to his vision is epic.

Death #2 - Tod's "Suicide"
Why would Tod grab a shaver to shave when he clearly is already clean-shaven? Why would Tod reach for nose clippers that can barely cut a nose hair, let alone a cord that is strangling him? If he can't snap the cord by pulling on it, those damn nose clippers aren't gonna do the trick either. And where's Tod's mom? They show his dad drunk and passed out in the couch downstairs, but where's mom? If she's asleep, then that would lead me to believe it was late at night. Why is Tod getting up to shave? And why would he plug in the radio to play music loudly if his mother is asleep?

Death #3 - Terry and the Bus
I have no complaints with this death. It entertains my husband, so I'll let it be.

Death #4 - Mrs. Lewton at Home
I completely understand her calling the cops. That creepy Alex kid lurking outside my house? Bam. 9-1-1 immediately. However, what I do not understand is her inability to notice the cracked mug or the insane amount of vodka dripping from the crack. I also don't understand why she has to run all over the place and knock her entire kitchen over just because she caught some shrapnel to the jugular. Look for that phone you so conveniently used five minutes ago and call the detective again. Duh. Serves you right to be blown up and stabbed in your own home. Grasping for a towel? That's on a stack of knives? That's just asking for it. And the actress's reaction to the whole situation just adds to the level of ridiculous. Talk about overacting.

Death #5 - Billy's Decapitation
Fake head. Dummy body. Enough said.

Death #6 - Not really sure...
I guess the 6th death would be Carter. It ends the movie abruptly, so I don't really even have a chance to react to it. Then I guess that would leave Clear to be next, which leads into Final Destination 2...and I don't remember what ever becomes of Alex. Not gonna watch the 2nd movie, so I guess I don't care enough to find out the answer.

Overall, this movie is pretty bad. I wouldn't say awful, because it did have Devon Sawa in it...and that's a plus in my book, but I will categorize it as bad.

I give Final Destination 2.5 out of 5 stars.
