#89 - Grease
Grease takes place in the 1950s at Rydell High School. Danny Zuko and Sandy Olsen meet at the beach and have a summer fling. They think that their romance is over for forever when they go their separate ways. However, to their disbelief, Sandy ends up attending Rydell and running into Danny. Danny is the leader of the T-Birds and has to keep up his reputation as being the tough guy, so he acts like he never cared for Sandy and blows her off. Sandy gets upset and starts dating a jock to make Danny jealous. It works. Danny apologizes to Sandy and does everything he can to make it up to her. He even gets his varsity letter in track. While Danny was trying to change for Sandy, Sandy was doing the same. She gets a make-over from her friend, Frenchy, and with the help of the other Pink Ladies, she completely transforms into Danny's dream girl. Danny and Sandy find a way to meet in the middle, and they drive off happily into the...sky?
Let's be honest. Grease is one of the greatest musicals ever created. There is NOTHING negative that I can or will say about this movie...other than that stupid flying car at the end of the final scene. Grease is perfection at its finest. Even though all of the cast members are 30 years old, playing the roles of high school seniors, it's believable...okay, except for Rizzo. Stockard Channing was 34 years old when they filmed this! Ah. I said no negatives! Stockard Channing being 34 isn't really a negative though. She's great as Rizzo, and I can't imagine anyone else ever playing the part; however, she just looks much older than the other cast members. Jamie Donnelly, who plays Jan, isn't far behind her though. I believe she was 32.
The music and choreography is to die for. The final scene at the carnival is one of my favorite scenes from a musical EVER.
Overall, I am in love with Grease and always will be in love with Grease. Jeff Conaway (RIP) is a dream as Kenickie, and quite possibly my favorite character in the film. "A hickey from Kenickie's like a Hallmark card" is by far the best quote in the script.
I give Grease 5 out of 5 stars.
