#122 - I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry
I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry is a film about accepting people for who they are, no matter what their sexual preference may be. Chuck and Larry are best friends who are as straight as they come. Chuck was Mr. February and has a different girl in his bed each night. Larry is a widow who spends his time raising his two kids and mourning the loss of his wife. When Larry is told that his pension cannot be transferred into his children's names, he puts together a plan to fix it. He convinces his best friend, Chuck, to sign paperwork stating that they're in a domestic partnership - that way, he can transfer the pension into Chuck's name and Chuck can make sure Larry's kids are taken care of in the event of his death. Everything goes downhill. The government knows that Chuck and Larry are lying, so they try their best to prove otherwise. It comes to a head in the courtroom, when they reveal that they really aren't gay. The state lets them off with a misdemeanor, as long as they help raise money for AIDS research.
I only own this movie because my husband is such a big Adam Sandler fan. This movie is a typical Sandler film, where the only funny parts are when there's a cameo made by a better actor than the lead. Rob Schneider, David Spade, and Nick Swardson add much needed comedy to the boring story line. It only gets good at the end when there's a real moral to it all.
I usually hate Sandler films because they get all serious and moralistic at the end, but in this case, I love it. I am pro-gay marriage, so the message is truly endearing to me. To see such homophobic characters turn around and become supportive of Chuck and Larry is a good ending.
I also love that in every way possible, Justin Timberlake is tied to this film...Jessica Biel is the lawyer, Lance Bass performs at the wedding, THIS...
Other than a few laughs, this movie flops for me.
I give I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry 2.5 out of 5 stars.
