Now time for movie #2 - 13 Going on 30. Even though I joked in my post title that this plot has been done a million times, this story line is one that I really love. Jennifer Garner is absolutely adorable as Jenna Rink, and she does a fantastic job of capturing the essence of a 13-year-old when she "wakes up" as a 30-year-old career woman.
In 13 Going on 30, Jenna Rink is an awkward 13-year-old...which, in reality, is EVERY 13-year-old. Teenagers like to think that they're cool and better than the other kids, but they're really not. They're all experiencing the weird transition years where you have braces, bad body odor, skin issues, puberty, asking out the girl/boy you like for the first time, etc. Face it, ages 12-17 are awkward. The reason I like 13 Going on 30 so much is because it also captures how awkward it can be to transition into adulthood and a career. Not only does Jenna Rink have to cope with the idea that she is no longer 13, but she also finds out that she lost contact with her best friend, Matt (played by the gorgeous and phenomenally talented, Mark Ruffalo). Throughout the film she has to re-prioritize her life and find out what truly matters to her.
This movie is incredibly adorable, and I would recommend it to any woman looking for a feel-good story. Notice I said that I would recommend it to WOMEN. This is definitely a chick flick, and it is definitely not going to be interesting to your average male.
I feel like this is a movie that all teenagers should watch at some point. It shows how ridiculous and meaningless popularity actually is, and that being yourself and finding friends who love you for you is what really matters.
I do want to point out the fact that 'The Six Chicks' in the film consist of Ashley Benson (Pretty Little Liars) and Brie Larson (21 Jump Street). Look at little Ashley Benson - her big film debut, and she is still playing an annoying popular girl that bothers me every moment she has screen time. Can you tell I'm over Hanna on PLL? Ugh.
Overall, I give 13 Going on 30 a solid 3.5 out of 5 stars.
