Review of 21 Jump Street - the movie, not the show

Movie #4 - 21 Jump Street. Not a fan of Channing Tatum. Not a fan of Jonah Hill. Together, however: COMEDIC GOLD. I believe Channing Tatum should continue to stick with comedy. He is funny.

21 Jump Street is a reboot of the show from the 80s. It even recognizes that fact when the police chief, played by Nick Offerman, says "We're reviving a canceled undercover police program from the '80s and revamping it for modern times. You see the guys in charge of this stuff lack creativity and are completely out of ideas, so all they do now is recycle shit from the past and expect us all not to notice." Thank you, IMdB, for being my go-to movie quote site! 21 Jump Street sends two rejects from the police department back to high school to bust a drug dealer. Sending these two to high school 10 years later shows them just how much teenagers have changed. I love the scene when Jonah and Channing arrive at the school, and Channing's trying to school Jonah on how to be cool. He's pointing out each of the cliques, when he gets to a group of Hipsters and Harishuku girls, and has no idea what they are. It's hilarious. This scene is also genius because it shows how what is cool one year might be totally out the next. Fads change all the time, so don't focus on what is "cool," just be whoever you want to be. I am sensing a trend in this message...13 Going on 30, 17 Again, 21 Jump Street...maybe teens should actually start listening to it. Good idea, right?

21 Jump Street was a real riot when I saw it in the theater, but now that I'm re-watching it, it's not as funny as I remember it being. Don't get me wrong, I did call Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum comedic gold, and they are...together. Put them in scenes separately, and it's a flop. This film has some seriously hilarious sections, but overall, it's just okay.

SPOILER ALERT: I did get incredibly excited when one of the bikers was revealed to be Johnny Depp - who starred in the original 21 Jump Street. That was awesome and completely unexpected. So, kudos to the director and casting for that choice.

Overall, I give 21 Jump Street 3 out of 5 stars.
