Review of Batman & Robin

Movie #26 - Batman & Robin

Batman & Robin is the last movie in the series of original Batman films. Tim Burton started the journey, and Joel Schumacher finished it. Along side Batman Forever, Batman & Robin is one of my favorite Batman movies of all time. I am NOT a fan of the Christopher Nolan Batman movies. They're boring and not visually pleasing. I LOVE the Gotham that was created in the original films. It makes Gotham seem untouchable and mysterious - which are two characteristics of Batman and his alter ego, Bruce Wayne. The bright colors and crazy architecture are intriguing.

While I do love this movie and its visual elements, I didn't necessarily say it's a good movie. It's cheesy, and some parts are extremely lame; however, I'm invested in the characters and their stories, so that makes it enjoyable for me. Take Mr. Freeze for instance, his story tugs at the heart strings. I know they make him campy, seeing as he is played by Arnold Schwarzenegger, but his reason for becoming a villain makes me feel sympathy for him. See, I'm a villain lover. Every villain has a reason behind why they turned to the dark side. Someone, somewhere, ruined their lives, and they're just looking for redemption, vengeance, or closure. Mr. Freeze is stealing diamonds to live. He literally cannot function without the diamonds in his suit. He loses power and would eventually die. He is also stealing diamonds to complete his contraption that will cure his wife (he currently has her suspended in water while he solves her whole dying problem). If everyone would've just left him alone, and let him steal the diamonds, he would've cured his wife and lived happily ever after - never having to steal diamonds again because he and his wife could live in their little ice castle for all time.

Now, Poison Ivy on the other hand, is a villain that doesn't necessarily have a reason for being cruel. She kills the man that killed her...well, pushed her into the venom and toxins which created what is Poison Ivy...so I don't understand her motive for taking down all of Gotham. I guess she's just a hormonal woman...typical...that won't rest until she kills all men. Still, that's not a good enough motive for me to actually see her purpose in becoming a villain. So, she's one of the few exceptions to my villain theory.

Speaking of Poison Ivy, let's talk about her ridiculous sidekick, Bane. Not gonna lie, even though I hate the Christopher Nolan Batman movies, Bane is a MUCH better villain in The Dark Knight Rises than he is in Batman & Robin. Bane is a moron in this movie. He has muscles, but not much of a brain. I guess that's why Poison Ivy likes him though - he'll listen to her every command (how she believes a man should act towards a woman like her). Ugh. She's pushing feminism to the opposite side of the spectrum in this movie.

Now let me touch on Chris O'Donnell...excuse the pun...oh my would I literally, not figuratively like to touch 20-year-old Chris O'Donnell. Heck, I'll take 40-year-old Chris O'Donnell as well. That boy is fine. Pretty sure he's the only reason why I originally had interest in this movie. 8th grade me was NOT interested in comic book movies or superheroes, so some driving force had to be there to get me into the theater. I remember being obsessed with this movie. Taco Bell was sponsoring it, so you could go to one of their restaurants and get Batman & Robin cups, stickers, whatever. Ah, the 90s. I miss the 90s.

So basically, this movie is cheesy, but I still love it. I'm going to rate it based on the actual content of the film though. I give Batman & Robin 2 out of 5 stars.
