Review of Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day

Movie #33 - Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day

Boondock Saints II follows the backstory of Connor and Murphy's father. His father was killed by a mobster in the 1950's, so he set out on a revenge streak. This landed him in jail for 25 years to life. A "friend" of his is trying to lure him out from hiding now that he has been released from prison by setting up and attempting to kill his two sons (Connor and Murphy). It works, and there's a final stand-off between Father MacManus and his former friend...well, guys that his former friend had hired to kill MacManus. The film ends with Connor and Murphy in a maximum security prison and a cameo from Willem Dafoe that leads the audience to believe there will be a third installment of the Boondock Saints. *Norman Reedus just announced that they are in the process of writing the third movie.

This film is not as good as the first one. It has interesting elements in it, but overall, lacks the feeling that the first Boondock Saints has. This film, for example, has a lot more humor in it. The funny scenes are funny, but I felt like it didn't work sometimes when juxtaposed with the action sequences and serious story line. I was also not a big fan of the casting. Julie Benz is probably one of the most annoying actresses in movies and television - she's right up there with Jennifer Tilly. Why they cast her to play the role of Eunice Bloom is completely beyond me. Her Southern accent was difficult to follow sometimes, and I felt like it didn't belong in Boston among the Saints and the mafia bad-asses. If a character stands out in a movie even more than the main characters, that usually means they were 1) Bad actors 2) Annoying 3) Both. Julie Benz as Eunice would be a definite #3. I was also not very fond of Clifton Collins, Jr. as Romeo. Although he had some funny lines, he was no David Della Rocco. Rocco was funny. Romeo was annoying. I think that the casting director needs to be replaced before they create Boondock Saints III. I think they're sleeping on the job. Eunice could've ended up being a very powerful female character, but instead, she ended up ruining most of the scenes.

Overall, I give Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day 2.5 out of 5 stars. It was just not nearly as awesome as the original film.
