Movie #60 - Death to Smoochy
Death to Smoochy is a story about Rainbow Randolph and his hatred for Smoochy - a purple rhino. When Rainbow Randolph is caught embezzling money, he is kicked out on the streets and loses his time slot for his popular television show. Sheldon Mopes (Smoochy) takes over, and Randolph's hatred begins. Sheldon becomes an even bigger hit than Randolph ever was, so Randolph gets even more angry. Not only does Smoochy make Randolph mad, but he also ticks off a high-powered man that runs a Children's organization. A hit is put out on Smoochy, but everything goes wrong. Sheldon has the support of the Irish mob, so they help keep him safe. In the end, Rainbow Randolph and Smoochy join forces. Everything end happily.
This movie is super weird, and I'm pretty sure it bombed in the box office...but I love it. Robin Williams and Edward Norton are fantastic. They're hilarious. I love movie scripts that are original. There are too many movies out there that are remakes or a screen adaptation of a novel. When an original movie surfaces, I jump all over it. I think this story is a winner. Sheldon's character may be completely odd, but he has strong values and sticks to them. He lives green, has a big heart, and trusts everyone. I wish everyone could be more like Sheldon Mopes. Then there's Randolph, who is the complete opposite. Randolph is power-hungry, egotistical, and misguided. He is basically the poster boy for what happens to people when fame and money gets a hold of them. To have the two characters juxtaposed makes for a strong plot. The differences between Sheldon and Randolph create the conflict throughout the story, which allows for some pretty hilarious scenes.
I am a huge Edward Norton fan, and a giant fan of Robin Williams as well. This is just an all-star cast. It is truly an enjoyable movie.
Overall, I give Death to Smoochy 4.5 out of 5 stars.
