Review: The Hangover: Part II

#97 - The Hangover: Part II

The Hangover: Part II is the sequel to The Hangover. We jet off to Thailand for Stu's wedding. All seems to be well until Alan messes things up again. Phil, Stu, and Alan wake up in Bangkok with no memory of the night before, and they're missing Teddy, Stu's fiance's little brother. They have to enlist the help of Mr. Chow to find Teddy and make everything right. Mr. Chow has a lot of enemies in Bangkok, so that is easier said than done. The guys set out on a wild journey through Thailand that gets them into a lot of trouble. In the end, everything works out for the best, and Stu makes it home in time for his wedding.

Let's be honest. This movie should have never been made. It's awful. I may have laughed a few times, but that's because I love the on screen dynamic between Phil, Stu, and Alan - add in Leslie Chow, and you get another level of funny. However, in this case, the jokes are just not there. With a foursome like Cooper, Helms, Galifianakis, and Jeong, the laughing should be a given...but it is not. The jokes are raunchy and miss the mark. Also, if you've ever seen the movie Brokedown Palace you know for damn sure that these guys would not get away with everything they did that night in Bangkok AT ALL. The authorities in Thailand don't mess around. Period. In the original film, the movie is believable to a certain extent. Crazy stuff happens in Vegas all the time. Not that crazy stuff doesn't happen in Bangkok, but the level of the things that happen to the guys is not believable by any means at all. The other reason this movie flopped was because they followed the exact same story line as the first film. No originality at all. The individual events that happened in Thailand were different, but the plot frame was identical to a T. That makes it extremely predictable. A movie that is predictable is not fun to watch.

I give The Hangover: Part II 2 out of 5 stars.
