Movie #19 - Armageddon
This movie reminded me of the love I once had for Ben Affleck. This was pre-Jennifer Lopez, pre-Gigli, pre-everything wrong he did with his life until he met Jennifer Garner. He's absolutely HOT as AJ in this film. Definitely fell back into my Ben Affleck crush while watching this.
Armageddon has a lot of good things going for it:
1) It has an incredible cast. Bruce Willis, Ben Affleck, Liv Tyler, Steve Buschemi, Owen Wilson, Billy Bob Thornton, Jason Isaacs, Michael Clarke Duncan...I reiterate: INCREDIBLE.
2) It has characters that you can connect to and feel for. When Harry switches places with AJ, you automatically begin to cry a waterfall of tears because you know why he's doing it, and you feel the love and respect that AJ and Harry have for each other. The writers chose certain characteristics to amplify in each character, and it works.
3) It has ACTION. You fear for the life of the characters constantly throughout this film. That creates suspense, and it keeps you on the edge of your seat.
4) The soundtrack contains Aerosmith. No explanation needed for this one.
What makes Armageddon not worthy of 5 out of 5 stars:
1) Some of the action sequences are too long. You begin to get bored, and it seems repetitive.
2) Steve Buschemi's character. Why they don't let him stay behind and sacrifice himself is beyond me. He even volunteers to do it. Why send AJ and Harry, your two male protagonists, to save the world and risk their lives, when you have a useless character who is literally screaming to be killed?! That always bothers me every time I watch the movie.
Overall, this movie brings back a lot of good memories from 8th-9th grade when this was released. This movie is a classic. One that everyone has seen, and even though there are flaws, the majority of the viewers still love it.
I give Armageddon 4 out of 5 stars.
