Movie #40 - Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason
The sequel to Bridget Jones's Diary takes us through the ups and downs of Bridget's relationship with Mark Darcy. She believes, after only six weeks of them dating, that Mark is having an affair, so she gets extremely jealous and ends things with him. *Cue Daniel Cleaver*. Daniel is now working in television, and Bridget's show 'Sit Up Britain' has asked her to go to Thailand with Daniel to record a segment. While on her way back from Thailand, she gets caught smuggling cocaine and is put in a Thai prison. Mark gets her out of jail, where she is then sent safely back to London - which he says he had nothing to do with (because he's mad at Bridget for allegedly being with Daniel). Once Mark finds out Bridget didn't sleep with Daniel, and Bridget finds out Mark actually orchestrated the entire release from prison, Bridget and Mark reconcile. Mark proposes marriage, and they live happily ever after. Sorry for the spoiler, but like you seriously didn't see that coming? Good girls don't end up with guys like Daniel Cleaver; we end up with wonderful men like Mark Darcy.
This movie is great, but not as great as the first film. The first movie is sheer perfection, so it sits up on a pretty high pedestal, in my opinion. Colin Firth, Hugh Grant, and Renee Zellweger are fantastic again in the sequel. I love casting directors that put Colin and Hugh in movies together. I should find those casting directors and shake their hands for blessing the world with the two of them on screen. There's an addition to the cast of Jacinda Barrett, who plays Rebecca - Mark's assistant. This is the woman Bridget thinks Mark is having an affair with. Now, this is where I get a little confused with the story. Bridget and Mark have been dating for six weeks, and Bridget is just now getting introduced to Rebecca. 1) Is Rebecca new to the company? 2) If so, then how in the world did Mark and Rebecca start an affair that quickly without Bridget knowing. 3) Why would Mark have an affair only six weeks after starting a new relationship. Six weeks is territory to just break up with someone...not start an affair. 4) How do Bridget's friends know who Rebecca Giles is before even hearing about her or meeting her? They're the ones that inform Bridget that Rebecca is at Mark's house. It's just confusing, and it doesn't add up in my head. Oh well, a lot of things don't make sense to me. I don't tend to dwell on them: gives me a headache.
Overall, I give Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason 4 out of 5 stars.
